Dogs are Family not Property - Change the NY State Dog Laws
The Issue
I am writing to express my strong support for revising the existing New York State dog law. As a passionate dog owner and advocate, I firmly believe that dogs are not mere property but cherished members of our families. It is essential that our legal framework recognizes this reality and reflects the bond we share with our canine companions.
The recent legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, known as the “pet custody bill,” is a step in the right direction. This bill acknowledges that companion animals deserve special consideration during divorce or separation proceedings. By emphasizing the best interests of the animal, rather than treating them as mere assets, we are moving toward a more compassionate and just approach.
However, there is still more work to be done. Here are some key points that I urge you to consider when revising the dog law:
Redefining Dogs as More Than Property:
Dogs provide emotional support, companionship, and unconditional love. They are not interchangeable items like furniture or vehicles.
We must recognize their unique status as sentient beings with feelings, needs, and individual personalities.
Between May of 2023 and August of 2023 3 dogs seriously hurt 2 dogs, critically injured a dog and killed a dog. The only recourse was to go to small claims court for a maximum $10,000. Even though the owners were negligent as well as the landlord of the building, we could not do anything. Why? Because dogs are property.
I am not a proponent of putting dogs down, however, when a dog(s) are aggressive and there is no investigation nor are the aggressors put to sleep it is inhumane to all the other dogs that their attackers get away with it.
In conclusion, I implore you to champion legislation that recognizes dogs as cherished family members. Let us create a legal framework that aligns with our compassion, empathy, and commitment to their well-being. Together, we can make New York a model state for progressive dog laws.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I trust that you will consider the welfare of our beloved dogs as you deliberate on these changes.
