The Issue

I believe that animal welfare should be everyone’s problem. It breaks my heart to think about the countless dogs suffering silently as they are walked during sweltering temperatures. Walking dogs on hot pavements can cause extreme distress, painful burns, dehydration, and even heatstroke, which can be fatal. This is not just a matter of inconvenience; it’s an urgent animal welfare issue.

When the temperature rises above 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), the ground can reach temperatures that are unbearable and dangerous for dogs’ sensitive paws. According to studies, asphalt can be 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air temperature. Imagine walking barefoot on such scorching surfaces! It’s not just uncomfortable; it’s harmful.

In recent years, there have been numerous reports and concerns raised by veterinarians and animal welfare organizations about the dangers of taking dogs out in the heat without adequate precautions. Animal rights groups like the RSPCA and the Humane Society have advised against walking pets in hot weather and instead suggest taking walks early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.

Some countries and cities have taken steps to educate the public on this issue, but it is not enough. We need legal measures to actively prevent the abuse and harm caused by walking dogs in high temperatures. Implementing fines or penalties for such actions could serve as a strong deterrent and protect countless animals from unnecessary suffering.

Join me in urging lawmakers to prioritize animal welfare and introduce legislation that makes it illegal to walk dogs when temperatures are dangerously high. Together, we can make a difference. Please sign this petition to ensure the safety and well-being of our beloved pets during those scorching hot days.
