Cancel 2021 Finals at Dobbs Ferry Highschool

Cancel 2021 Finals at Dobbs Ferry Highschool
The Issue
In March 2020, Covid-19 had shut down Dobbs Ferry's School District, forcing students to begin "remote only" learning. It was not until late January 2021, that students had the option to have "in person" classes for half of a school day, two days a week. Last year, final examinations and New York Regent Examinations were cancelled due to the unfair and unnecessary stress it would put on students during this difficult time. Now again this year, New York Regent Examinations have been cancelled, as the U.S Department of Education feels that "school instructional time would be best focused on supporting students in academics as well as social-emotional health rather than attempting to administer assessments to the limited population of students who are receiving in-person instruction". Students are asking that the school board considers cancelling Dobbs Ferry High School final examinations as well. Final examinations put a large amount of stress and pressure on students. It is unfair and unrealistic to ask students to take a final on curriculums that have been taught remotely and with many modifications during such a difficult time. Many students have not been able to learn successfully with remote learning and their grades has suffered due to this. Students have also been greatly suffering with their mental health during lockdown. According to a 2020 mental health study, mental health issues within high schoolers have skyrocketed 103.5% due the pandemic lockdown. It is unrealistic and unfair to add the extensive amount of stress of a final examination on high school students. Taking all of this information under consideration, we ask that the 2021 final examinations will not be administered to Dobbs Ferry High School students.
