Do you love the Mighty Murray? Halt construction in Victoria’s Redgum Parks

The issue

Do you love the Mighty Murray and Redgum Forests? Growing up alongside The Nyah and Vinifera Redgum Parks, I experienced their majestic beauty. Our community, along with hundreds of thousands of Victorians, treasures the accessible wilderness and recreation the Redgum Parks along the Mighty Murray River provide. From camping trips to fishing, swimming and boating, these parks serve as a sanctuary and a beloved destination for countless families and nature enthusiasts.

The Victorian Government has plans to introduce massive construction projects inside the Redgum Forests along the Murray in Victoria. Vinifera and Nyah Forest are under immediate threat, but your favourite forest could be next on the list. These projects will irrevocably change these cherished natural landscapes. The strategy includes bringing in heavy machinery to bulldoze hundreds of trees, and construction of extensive levy banks, and concrete regulators in the heart of these parks. There is an immediate devastation of trees, flora and fauna, but the plans to pump water onto the floodplain will increase proliferation of Blue Green Algae and lethal Blackwater. Both are deadly to fish and water plants. Blue Green algae is a health risk to people, a risk to tourism, recreation, and agriculture.

It's not just the environmental cost that's at stake here. These plans could forever change the way we enjoy the Mighty Murray River. Community will be locked out of the forests during construction, and after the forests will be divided by levy banks. Access to your favourite swimming or fishing spot will be difficult, via off ramps on the levy bank. This is not the natural haven we all know and love! The destruction of natural habitats and the blocking of waterways will directly impact wildlife, like the fish populations that are crucial to the ecosystem and our local culture. Altering the river's natural flow and will disrupt the delicate balance that has been sustaining this precious environment for centuries, affecting recreational activities and the broader ecological landscape.

We must take a stand now to safeguard this vital piece of Victoria's heritage. By halting these engineered floodplain works, we act to preserve not just the parks themselves, but our Murray River way of life.

We call upon the Victorian Government to reconsider these devastating plans in favour of sustainable environmental management practices that protect wildlife, maintain natural beauty, and uphold our communities’ connection to these lands.

Join us in opposing these destructive development plans. Help protect the Redgum Parks, the fish, and our Murray River way of life from irreversible harm. Stand with us to ensure that future generations can continue to celebrate and enjoy these iconic landscapes. Sign this petition to safeguard our invaluable natural heritage and reject heavy construction that threaten its integrity. Let your voice be heard in preserving the Mighty Murray for today and tomorrow!
