Do Not Euthanize Colombia’s Hippos

The Issue

Colombia plans to euthanize around 80 hippos from a population that has grown to about 200 animals.

These hippos, descendants of animals brought decades ago, are now part of the local ecosystem and economy. They attract tourism that supports local communities, while also raising concerns about safety and environmental impact.

The government says the population could exceed 500 by 2030, and argues euthanasia may be necessary if other options fail.

But killing should not be the first solution.

There are alternatives:

Relocation to sanctuaries or zoos
Controlled breeding programs
Confinement strategies
We call on:

Colombia’s Environment Ministry
to prioritize humane, non-lethal solutions and halt plans for mass euthanasia.

Sign to say: don’t kill the hippos—choose humane solutions.
