Do not assign tasks when classes are suspended due to a typhoon.

Do not assign tasks when classes are suspended due to a typhoon.

The Issue

We all have responsibilities and personal matters; it does not end whatever and whenever the situation. To be mentally, physically, financially, and consciously prepared when there is a threat for us like a Typhoon and other inconvenience. Be a soldier for those students who are experiencing struggles during a typhoon and yet, they still must do their responsibility as a student. We all are NOT in the same roof, situation, and have the same ability to endure the effect of calamity and at the same time, thinking “how can I finish all of those tasks given to me?” Be a soldier for them, help us in advocating for no to activities during a typhoon in all schools by signing up and sharing to all your friends our “do not assign tasks when classes are suspended due to a typhoon.” petition here in change.org. The students of ABM 11-EXECUTIVES are inviting you to support our cause allowing the students to rest and mind their problems at home.

As we all know, when our city/province has a Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS), automatically, the government will suspend the classes, DEPED recommended that the students shall stay at home for their safety. While they are at home, students have more important things to think about, including their safety and restoring their well-being causing them to be stressed and burdened more than necessary in these tough times. The purpose of this petition is for us to understand that assigning tasks when classes are suspended due to a typhoon has a negative impact. This change would support students' mental health and allow them to fully concentrate on navigating the impacts of typhoons.

Assigning tasks during a typhoon can add stress for students, burden teachers with extra work, and pressure parents who may lack necessary resources while prioritizing the safety of their children. During typhoons, people feel scared and worried because of the fierce winds, heavy rain, and the possibility of floods that can damage their houses. It is also hard for families because there might be no electricity, the internet might be slow, and their homes or roads could get flooded.

If the implementation of not assigning tasks during class suspensions due to a typhoon is conducted, it will help both students and teachers understand that during a typhoon, schoolwork is set aside so they can focus on staying safe without worrying about tasks. This will help keep a balance between studying and safety. However, if tasks are still given to students during a suspension, it will cause stress for them. They will be more focused on finishing their work than on their own safety during a disaster. It will also put some students at an unfair disadvantage, especially those who lack the resources needed to complete their tasks in such situations.

Immediate action is essential to ensure that no tasks are assigned to students when classes are suspended due to a typhoon. Assigning tasks during such times can increase stress for students who may be facing power outages, internet disruptions, or personal hardships. The council and teachers must act swiftly on this policy to avoid adding extra burdens to students and their families during emergencies.

Moreover, implementing this policy will also help create a feeling of security for students and their families during an already stressful situation. Recognizing this need proves an understanding of the challenges posed by the typhoon.

In addition, Typhoons are extraordinary events that require a shift in priorities. Homework, while important, should be put on hold during such times to allow students to prioritize their well-being and focus on the immediate needs of themselves and their families. Students may lack the necessary tools, such as computers, internet connections, or even basic supplies, to complete their assignments. And there is a possibility that the electricity will be out and SAJELCO cannot be restored quickly. Students can do their homework as an activity and continue it in school after the typhoon. Moreover, learners have more responsibilities than doing their homework, and their safety must go first. In such situations, homework becomes a secondary concern, as ensuring their safety should be the top priority. By suspending homework during these times, we can ensure that students have the space and resources they need to recover, rebuild, and thrive.

Due to the storm, Government officials will suspend the classes and set as asynchronous alternative activities. And because of that, some of the students prioritize their school activities more than their own safety. Instead of focusing on their safety and preparing for any disaster, they still think more about the activities that are planned for them.

Therefore, they should prioritize the physical and emotional safety of students rather than setting them activities. "The safety and well-being of the students should always be the top priority" then, more attention should be paid to the safety of the students. That is why we stand to "Do not Assigning Task when Classes Suspended due to Typhoon" because we can use the time, we distribute in school activities to prepare and be initiative-taking in the threat of disaster. Other than that, there are also students who may have a lack of power, internet, or device that cannot keep up with the deadline of activities during typhoon.

We take this position because we believe that it will improve the students’ physical and emotional well-being. Typhoons are serious and should not be taken lightly. While we understand that giving tasks are important for students not to fall behind the lesson, teachers should also keep in mind the students’ well-being. Therefore, experiencing a typhoon can be stressful and students certainly do not need more tasks to add on to the stress.

Not assigning tasks when classes are suspended due to a typhoon is to ensure students’ safety during extreme weather. Many students have faced serious risks during typhoons, with some students losing their lives. Class suspensions are meant to provide students with a break and prioritize their safety. Assigning work during a typhoon can cause stress. This can also have a negative impact on students’ mental health.

Giving students assignments can add extra stress to them and their families. The main reason for suspending classes is to keep everyone safe, as students might face power outages, flooding, or other challenges that make it hard to focus on schoolwork. If teachers still gave assignments, some students may have trouble completing them because of limited resources. This could lead to feelings of frustration and unfairness, as not everyone has the same access to things like electricity or the internet. The time off should allow students to focus on their safety and well-being, rather than worry about school tasks. By not assigning work during these times, teachers show understanding and help create a more supportive environment.
