Registration plates are the most viewable public inscriptions. In 1993 California DMV introduced white license plates https://bit.ly/2HNWzLU with the handwritten word "California", probably in a slightly modified font named Rage Italic https://bit.ly/2LCDtXG with the added long tail after final "a" (the so-called swash). Even a person untrained in fontography easily notices that there are spaces between the letters "Ca" and "ia" in this inscription. However, in cursive fonts that resemble handwriting, all pairs of letters should be connected as it is customarily in any real handwriting.

The present inscription makes me sick anytime I see one which happens several times a day while waiting at traffic lights. I'd like to ask the DMV of the State of California to correct that inscription on all new license plates being issued. The cost of creating new masks for painting license plates is certainly less than $1k.

Perpetuating bad typography is detrimental to the public good!
