Reduce Tuition for UF Online Semester

Reduce Tuition for UF Online Semester

The Issue

With the University of Florida revealing on July 10 its plan to reopen for the fall semester, most students were left anxious and upset to learn that many (if not all) of their classes were moved to an online format. Shockingly, there was no mention of a tuition freeze or reduction in the university’s announcement on July 10 nor the 31-page reopening plan released on June 26.

While students can understand the reasoning for shifting classes to an online format, it only makes sense that tuition be reduced as well because of the lack of accessibility to the UF campus and all of its resources offered in normal situations. Why should students be responsible for paying the same amount of tuition that is required of them for an entirely online format? How can the university pride itself on listening to the concerns of its students without considering this very issue?

I especially urge the University of Florida to consider its out-of-state students who are not awarded the same benefits as Bright Futures. What promises are UF offering to these students if they stay? What is preventing them from transferring to an in-state college more affordable if UF has offered no tuition reduction from the standard mid-$40k a year? Does the university prioritize me or my finances?

While many UF students were urged to go home early this past spring semester, they also found themselves locked into leases for this upcoming year; many will be unable to live in their apartments. Among the many costs of college, especially considering the financial struggles amidst the pandemic, why should students still be paying full price tuition?

Please, UF,  listen to this valid concern of your students. We want to continue our paths at the University of Florida, to uphold the Gator spirit, and to succeed in our endeavors within the school.
