Impose Restorative justice in DCPS

The Issue

Our petitions goal is to begin to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. This pipeline plays a role in mass incarceration as it introduces students to the system early on. This is made worse since once someone has had an encounter with the American prison system, it is more than likely that they will have multiple encounters in the future.

Our campaign aims to combat this cycle by implementing restorative and transformative justice practices in Public Schools. This includes advocating for Public Schools to sever their relationship with the local police, resulting in the removal of school resource officers on campus and also would increase funding to provide more resources to the students. Also, we are advocating for Public Schools to support grassroots organizations that have been laying the groundwork all over the US in terms of Restorative and Transformative Justice.

To start the process of dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline we would like to start with the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). This is because there are already a lot of well-established activist groups that will be able to help the transition to implement restorative justice in DCPS. This will be a massive first step in right the direction of dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline and decreasing the militarized police state on campuses.
