Please release elephant Shekharan to a sanctuary

The Issue

An elephant by the name KeechamparambuShekharan who had gored his master, OzhakkalaBabu to death is now living in utterly deplorable conditions in Theekoyil, Erattupetta. He has been chained to this spot since the tragedy and hasn’t been getting enough fodder or water for nearly a month now. The locals say that the late Babu’s daughter has abandoned him.

Shekharan had been put to work while he was still in musth and had gone berserk during that time. His owner, Babu was brought in, in an attempt to calm him down, which unfortunately had a tragic end. He was chained at that spot later. This happened 30 days back.

Since the forelimbs are chained, he is unable to lie down and has been standing on his feet for the last 30 days. For an animal that drinks an average of 250 litres of water a day, he hardly get a liter these days. The locals say that he sometimes is seen eating the mud around him, which is probably in search of moisture. The District Administration and the Forest Department has turned a blind eye to the suffering of this animal. While the loss of Babu can never be compensated for, is it right to treat a voiceless animal like this, ask the locals.

The conditions Shekharan is housed in is in Violation of many sections of Law - Namely 428 & 429 of IPC, Sections 11(f),11(g). 11(h), 11(i) of PCA 1960 and Sec 42 of WPA 1972. If you are not confident of quoting the law, don't but jst mention that it is in violation of prevention of cruetly to animals, and Wildlife protection act

It is no fault of this animal that he was made to work during his musth period and he is now suffering tremendously. We request , you to ensure that Shekharan is taken care of - provided food and water, shade and allowed to rest and lie down. Also a long term plan for his release to a sanctuary needs to be made. There is a chain free elephant sanctuary in Bangalore, Bannerghatta Biological Park, where Shekharan can be retired to. he deserves to live a life of dignity as he has been abused for such a long time.

We hope for your intervention to make this possible..
