Investigate TBN officers' failure to report allegation of child abuse
Investigate TBN officers' failure to report allegation of child abuse
The Issue
In June 2012, Carra Crouch sued Trinity Broadcasting Network for covering up a horrific allegation of child abuse. Carra, the granddaughter of TBN founders Paul and Jan Crouch, claims that in 2006, when she was 13 years old, a TBN employee plied her with wine, then drugged and raped her.
When Carra told Jan Crouch about what happened, Jan Crouch screamed at her and claimed it was her fault. Carra then tried to talk to TBN's general counsel, John Casoria, who had sat in on the earlier meeting. Casoria not only claimed the rape was Carra's fault, but suggested she brought it on herself by supposedly being sexually active. In truth, the Crouches and Casoria found Carra's claims credible enough that they summarily fired the employee the next day. However, they did not report the incident to police even though as ordained ministers, they were required to do so under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
Although a mandated reporter's failure to report a child abuse allegation is only a misdemeanor, the Crouches and Castoria must be held accountable for their failure to uphold their legal and moral obligation to protect children. The least that can be done is for the Orange County district attorney to conduct a criminal investigation into the matter.
