Dissolve the Pro-Life Society at the University of Manchester
Dissolve the Pro-Life Society at the University of Manchester
The Issue
EDIT: First of all thank you for all of the continuous support from both students and others alike. I would also like to make clear that this petition is in no way calling for any harassment or intimidation of the members/committee of the Pro-Life society personally. That would be hypocritical and outright wrong. I’d also like to clarify that I (the person who made this petition) am not the same person who is running the “stopmanchesterprolife” instagram.
Following statements from the Students' Union team, it has been made clear that unfortunately, the society is within its legal right to exist, so I do not believe we will be able to meet the goal laid out by this petition. However, I still believe that this petition is capable of being a force of good. It acts as a powerful representation of the sheer number of people opposed to pro-life culture, which we should all remember. You have the right to choose, and even if this society exists, that won't change. At the time of writing this, there are at least 14,000 people who will support you in that right.

Stay safe everyone, and remember it is YOUR CHOICE and we support whatever that choice is
---------------------------------------
I am a concerned student at the University of Manchester, deeply troubled by the potential harm that could be caused by our university's Pro-Life Society. The existence of this society adds to an already prevalent stigma surrounding abortion, a legal right in our country. Women at our university should not have to face additional pressure or judgement on such personal matters.
Abortion is a legal and established right in England, Scotland, and Wales since 1967 (Abortion Act). It is not just about choice; it's about access to safe healthcare. According to NHS statistics, nearly 200,000 abortions were carried out in England and Wales in 2018 alone. This shows that many women need this service for various reasons - medical, personal or socio-economic.
The Student Union should be a place that supports all students' rights and wellbeing rather than endorsing societies that aim to abolish these rights. We ask for your support in dissolving the Pro-Life Society at the University of Manchester as it has potential to cause distress among students who may require access to abortion services now or in future.
Please sign this petition if you believe every woman should have her right respected without fear or stigma within our university community.
