As an American citizen, I find myself torn between pride for our athletes and despair at the actions of our government. The atrocities unfolding in regions such as the Middle East and Congo, where millions are disenfranchised, forced to starve, and are killed indiscriminately, are unbearable to witness. It is unconscionable that we should be expected to cheer for our athletes while these horrific events occur with our government's support and our tax dollars funding it. 

The United States Government continues to engage with and actively support regimes committing genocide through vocal endorsement, financial aid, and military armament. This behavior is antithetical to the spirit of the Olympic Games - a global event that symbolizes unity, peace, and respect among nations.

According to Human Rights Watch's 2020 World Report, numerous countries supported by U.S foreign policy continue to commit human rights abuses including genocide (Human Rights Watch). Our participation in an event that promotes peace amd solidarity with our global brothers and sisters while supporting such regimes is contradictory.

We call upon the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to disinvite the American Olympic Team from participating in future games until such time as our government ceases its support of genocidal regimes. This action would send a powerful message about accountability for human rights abuses on a global scale.
