Disney to Stop Being Overprotective Against Its Content to Others

The Issue

“MeTV Toons is the newest cable channel to feature classic animation 24 hours a day 7 days a week, owned by Weigel Broadcasting in a partnership with Warner Bros Discovery, featuring animation from Warner Bros(Looney Tunes, the Hanna-Barbera library, the MGM cartoon library), as well as most of the third party studios like NBCUniversal(Woody Woodpecker), Sony Pictures Television(The Real Ghostbusters), and more.

HOWEVER, there is one major company that was missing from all of this, which is of course, Disney, which confirmed had zero interest whatsoever in having their toons and television animation series air on this new network(which has an equal chance of having their animated shows and classic shorts on the network as much as Dick Tracy, which is pretty much a 0% chance), due to Disney being way too overprotective with their characters and intellectual properties, but they’re okay with some things that Disney licensed to other channels like “Bob’s Burgers” still being on WB-owned [adult swim] after its deal ended in late 2023, but they managed to keep the Bletchers on AS(when TBS moved on from them), the Star Wars and Marvel movies sharing broadcast rights with Disney-owned FX and the WB-owned TNT/TBS in a long term deal, and most recently, “Family Guy” reruns coming to Paramount-owned Comedy Central at the time of this writing in a non-exclusive deal, and they might as well bring over The Simpsons to either [adult swim] or the first few seasons on MeTV in the coming months, they think it’s okay for this to happen, why is Disney afraid of having their own animation(that isn’t 20th TV Animation) on a new, fan favorite cable channel primarily dedicated to classic animation.

Honestly, this should change, as Disney will have no choice, but to stop being overprotective of its intellectual properties and start licensing its library to others again, beginning with the addition of classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, some animated features(like “A Goofy Movie”, “Fantasia”, “Dumbo”, etc), and some of the Disney Afternoon library to MeTV Toons(who wouldn’t want TaleSpin or Darkwing Duck on cable for the first time since Toon Disney went off the air, as Disney has no plans of reviving that kind of channel, why not license their shows to another channel, even if they don’t want to), which could save Disney some money and get some major loyalty checks like they’ll be doing with the recent Comedy Central rerun package for Family Guy.

Which would then be followed by, Turner Classic Movies reviving their monthly “Treasures from the Disney Vault” series, then have STARZ license the future live action Disney theatrical releases on cable television 18 months before they land on Disney Plus(beginning in 2025 and beyond, for films like Marvel Studios films such as “Captain America: Brave New World”, “Thunderbolts*”, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, “Avengers: Doomsday”, “Avengers: Secret Wars”, the remakes of “Snow White” and “Lilo & Stitch”, “Tron: Ares”, “Freakier Friday”, and Lucasfilm releases like “The Mandalorian & Grogu”, etc.), after initially bailing out from a long term relationship with STARZ after 2015, while Netflix would have first dibs on the upcoming theatrical animated roster beginning in 2025 with Pixar’s “Elio” and Disney Animation’s “Zootopia 2”, and would continue in 2026 and beyond with “Toy Story 4”, “Hoopers”, “Incredibles 3”, “Frozen 3”, etc., 18 months before they reach Disney Plus(similar to how the animated releases from Universal right now with Peacock and Netflix sharing films from Illumination and DreamWorks(including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Super Mario Bros Movie) that started in 2022), Netflix would also nab the non-exclusive streaming rights to several animated Disney Channel & Disney Jr shows like “The Owl House”, “Amphibia”, “The Ghost & Molly McGee”, “Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur”, “Hailey’s on It”, “Kiff”, “DuckTales(2017)”, “Elena of Avalor”, “Mira: Royal Detective”, “Sofia the First”(even though it was previously on Netflix prior to 2022), “The Lion Guard”, etc. and a decent selection of Disney films that would make their Netflix debut, like Pixar’s 2022 flop, “Lightyear” and Disney Animation’s 2022 sci-fi flop, “Strange World”(and a decent selection of live action movies from the 2010’s and early 2020’s that didn’t bring in revenue for Disney+, but may find a second life on Netflix), and maybe someday MeTV, could also nab “The Muppet Show”, nearly in its entirety and for the first time on American television in over 30 years(alongside a possible future acquisition of the first few seasons(mainly the seasons from the 1990’s) of The Simpsons), as a goodwill gesture from Disney.

This would also affect cinemas as for some random reason of its policy of refusing to allow first-run theaters to show older Fox and Disney movies via Fathom Events and $1 summer movie shows, that policy needs to end starting next year, so Fathom Events can book Home Alone and Sound of Music for their anniversaries next year(and the theatrical return of 2003's Freaky Friday as a Fathom Event before the debut of Freakier Friday, and yearly showings of Muppet Christmas Carol) and Regal/Cinemark/Phoenix/Harkins/RC Theatres would finally bring the likes of The Good Dinosaur/Cars 3/Finding Dory/Ron's Gone Wrong/Spies in Disguise/A Goofy Movie/Muppet Treasure Island/The Muppets(2011)/Muppets Most Wanted/101 Dalmatians(1996)/Recess School's Out/Max Keeble's Big Move/Return to Neverland/Jungle Book 2/DuckTales The Movie-Treasure of the Lost Lamp/The Tigger Movie/Piglet's Big Movie/Pooh's Heffalump Movie/The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh/Christopher Robin/Benji the Haunted/Planes/Disneynature's library 2009-19/20th Century G & PG library pre-2019 back to theaters annually in a new long-term agreement joining Universal, WB, Sony, and Paramount in their summer movie programs for kids and families

I think it’s a bit redundant for Disney to be overprotective about the IPs that they own and refusing to air their content on other channels and streaming services(especially the latter when Disney+ launched when it was going to be the next cash cow by pulling their films from Netflix and Starz and potentially the next Netflix, but ended up losing millions of dollars), even though they’re okay with licensing some of the movies on others like HBO, Starz, and TNT/TBS, and the Fox toons like Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers to Comedy Central and [adult swim] respectively, and yet they’re scared to having their own shows, films, and classic cartoons to others, so whatever you do, please sign this petition and convince Disney to change their minds on licensing their own animation to other networks beginning with MeTV Toons and then to the others, starting right now.”
