Base the Next Star Wars Film Trilogy on the Thrawn Book Trilogy

Any new Star Wars trilogy from Disney/LucasFilm ought to build on the success of the Expanded Universe (EU) continuity, starting with the best-selling book series known as the Thrawn Trilogy.

For many years, George Lucas has had a hand creating two memorable science-fantasy trilogies for the Star Wars universe. Now that he has handed over his company LucasFilm to the Disney Corporation, many fans are eager to see the third trilogy on the big screen - and Disney has already responded by annoucing the Star Wars Episode VII for release in 2015.

Many fans want the third trilogy to cover some part of the vast Expanded Universe continuity, based off the books, video games, and other mediums produced by many talented individuals but ultimately controlled by Lucas Licensing.

A logical film trilogy based off the Expanded Universe would be the Thrawn Trilogy, a set of novels set about 5 years after Return of the Jedi. The trilogy is considered a very important milestone in the early literary Expanded Universe, and introduces many important concepts that are used by other writers and developers. Characters such as the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn, future Luke Skywalker wife Mara Jade, and Han Solo and Princess Leia's twins Jaina and Jacen Solo.

Unfortunately, an article by E!Online reports that the next film trilogy with be an original story developed from a treatment written by George Lucas.

We the signees believe that a theatrical Thrawn trilogy will be more successful, easier-to-develop, and will create more fan excitement than an all-original story. We propose that the preliminary plans be scrapped, and that production for Star Wars Episode VII instead center on adapting the first Thrawn novel, Heir to the Empire.
