The Issue

My name is Jenna and I am a Marquette student suffering from severe sleep deprivation due to the uncomfortable living conditions in Mashuda Hall. Our residence director, Larnecia Smith, consciously turned off the air conditioning in 80-degree heat, promoting an atmosphere unsuitable for study, relaxation, or a good night's sleep. As a result of her actions, my academic performance, health, and overall wellbeing have been severely impacted.

As a resident of this hall, I represent many students who are experiencing similar discomfort due to this issue. Mashuda Hall is currently home to hundreds of students just like me, attempting to focus on their studies while persisting under poor living conditions. We are not asking for luxury, just the standard necessities essential for a conducive learning environment. This is something we believed we were paying for - our annual tuition and room fee amounting to a staggering $80,000.

Larnecia Smith's actions significantly contrast the university's commitments to and investment in student success. Urging her firing would send a robust signal of the importance placed by the university on maintaining a dedicated, supportive staff committed to ensuring the physical and mental health of the student body.

Please join us in holding the university accountable for providing the standards of care we, as students, deserve. We must demand Larnecia Smith's dismissal from her position at Mashuda Hall. Sign this petition today and show that student welfare should always be the number one priority.
