I am writing this petition not as a personal acquaintance of Damien Pickett, but as someone who empathizes with his situation. Like him, I have faced an unruly mob and understand the fear that comes with it. It is a terrifying experience to be in a position of authority and yet be disrespected and threatened by those you are supposed to oversee.

Damien Pickett was co-captaining a ferry boat when he found himself in the midst of an out-of-control brawl on the Alabama waterfront. Despite being in uniform and representing authority, he was met with blatant disrespect. In that moment, he defended himself - an act which has now led to charges against him.

It's important to note that self-defense is recognized as a legal right under U.S law (Cornell Law School). Yet this man who was merely trying to protect himself from harm now faces legal repercussions for his actions.

This petition seeks justice for Damien Pickett. We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider these charges against him given the circumstances under which they were incurred. This man does not deserve punishment for defending himself amidst chaos and disrespect.
