This is a plea to shift our global priorities and hard-earned resources from fueling warfare and militarism towards fostering peace, safety, and human development. Every dollar spent on the military is a dollar less being spent on education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and the environment. In 2020 alone, global military expenditure rose to almost $2 trillion (SIPRI Fact Sheet, April 2021). Nuclear weapons, the epitome of destructive warfare, not only hold a horrendous potential for mass destruction but also cost the U.S. around $35.4 billion in 2019 (Congressional Budget Office report, May 2020). We believe that Chicago, IL, USA, like everywhere else, could benefit more from these resources being channeled into peaceful, beneficial socioeconomic elements.
