Disinvite Mitt Romney as 2024 Commencement Speaker at Johns Hopkins University

The Issue

As a graduating student of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am deeply disturbed by the decision to invite Mitt Romney as the commencement speaker for our 2024 ceremony. This choice feels like a betrayal to me and many others who value diversity, inclusivity, and progressive healthcare policies.

Mitt Romney's track record is one that contradicts these values. His regressive policies have been non-inclusive and have supported restricted healthcare access for femme bodied Americans. This is not in line with our university's mission or with what we stand for as students.

Johns Hopkins University continuously has been an institution that promotes diversity and inclusion. Our school embodies these principles, fostering creativity while respecting individuality. The Peabody campus shares these values too.

Inviting a right-winged politician who does not align with our values sends a wrong message to us – the graduating class – whom this university claims to "value and empower". It feels like we are being told that despite all our efforts towards progressiveness, regression is still being given such an important platform at our own graduation ceremony.

We urge Johns Hopkins University administration to reconsider their decision on inviting Mitt Romney as commencement speaker for 2024. Let us stand together in upholding the true values of inclusivity, diversity, respect for all identities and progressive healthcare policies which this institution has taught us to cherish.

Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving these principles at Johns Hopkins University.
