Stop using Shark Week for fear mongering.

The Issue

Since 1988, Shark Week has aired annually on Discovery Channel. Originally created to educate the public about sharks and their many amazing attributes, proramming has recently turned into something better suited for SyFy.

There are more than 440 species of sharks in our waters. Out of all these varieties, only THREE are deemed dangerous (Great White, Bull, and Tiger). Public fear of sharks has led to the killing of an estimated 100 million sharks a year, despite the incredibly low risk of being bitten. These incredible apex predators have managed to survive millions of years, but are in danger of widespread culling simply to reduce risk to humans.

Shark Week captures the attention of roughly 3 million people every year. Unfortunately, they are using this opportunity to post fictitious documetaries such as the Megalodon series, and spread fear of these amazing animals instead of educating people. In order to put a stop to this, the public must demand factual programming.
