With the advent of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (more commonly known as NFTs) people now have the opportunity to completely change their financial lives in a span of time, that in previous years, would have been impossible to do legally (I'm talking weeks or even days). Due to the massive potential gains of these asset classes, the people within these communities have flocked to two platforms in particular... Twitter and Discord. Twitter is used primarily for information leaks and project promotion, while Discord serves as a hub for community engagement and interaction on most Web 3.0 projects. This has lead scammers to flock to these platforms, in an attempt to take advantage of people who are new to the space or don't currently know what to look out for. Despite the fact that nearly all of these crypto and NFT servers tell people to "Turn off DMs!!" in their server sign up pages, most people do not... as sadly, almost no one actually reads Terms of Service agreements anymore. Everyday, I interact with individuals who come to me confused asking where there products are, after they've spent thousands of dollars trying to get into a crypto or NFT project; only to find out that the DM they received (impersonating the actual project or it's team members) was a scam, and that their product is never coming. People are gambling everything that they have on some of these projects; and these individuals are sometimes even loosing their life savings to theses scammers, that could easily be avoided. So with that in mind, I implore Discord to make their servers default to "DMs off". If people wish to receive DMs in their server, it will still be as easy as toggling a switch. This is a simple change that will quite literally prevent hundreds of thousands, if not, millions of dollars of fraudulent behavior that is currently being conducted on Discord's platform each and every month.
