Discontinue Yondr pouches

The Issue

Students across Fairfax Country Public Schools (FCPS) are required to use Yondr pouches. Teachers and staff who work at the schools using Yondr pouches claim that the students attending the schools need them due to the fact that phones buzz and are a distraction. However, the students at the school would complain that the cellphones are their property that they bought or even their parental guardians purchased, meaning that the school couldn't legally take their property. Cellphones don't always have to be a distraction. They can be a tool to help grow the mind in academics. Students with phones have the right to argue that in the scenario in which they are in a lock down or a dangerous person is on campus, they should be able to have their phone on them to inform their parents that they are okay if they make it out. However, if their phone is locked in a pouch that can only be opened at the end of the school day, and is unavailable at other times, they would be left with their phone stuck in their Yondr pouch, unable to speak with their parents in an emergency. The staff at the schools using Yondr pouches almost always have phones of their own, which makes sense. It also makes sense that they would be allowed to have it on them out of a pouch. However, staff at some of these schools use their phones during the school day and set bad examples for the students attending the school and really show an unfair work ethic. A principle at one of these schools even told the students that she had 2 phones that she uses. She claims that one is for work and one is for other things, which partially makes sense so that your work and personal things are separate and you only use one phone for work. Although this may have some sense, students at the school in an emergency or having an issue are forced to use the staff phone in the office with all of the staff in the office listening to their conversation, rather than just being able to use their phone to contact their family members. If a student can also not remember their guardian or family member's number, it can be an issue. If the students are forced to use the office phones for emergencies, then the staff should be able to use those phones for work, too.
