The Issue

Living in a community should be about mutual support and shared values. Unfortunately, for residents of Equestrian Trail in Sumter, South Carolina, the experience with our Homeowners Association (HOA) has been anything but beneficial. We are paying individuals, who aren't even part of our community, to dictate the terms of our backyard – literally and metaphorically. As residents who invest daily in making our homes and neighborhoods better, it feels unjust to be subject to an HOA that doesn’t serve our needs or reflect our community's voice.

Homeowners Associations are supposed to enhance communal living, offering services, creating harmony, and maintaining property values. Yet, the current situation with the Equestrian Trail HOA is far from this ideal. Instead of seeing improvements, we face arbitrary rules and mandates from his group that have little resemblance to our actual community's needs or desires. This disconnect has become a source of frustration and dissatisfaction among many residents.

Data and stories from similar communities, such as those published by the Community Associations Institute, highlight that HOAs that fail to genuinely connect with and serve the residents often end up hindering rather than helping communities. They note that associations can lose their way when priorities shift from the value and comfort of homeowners to compliance and enforcement of rules beneficial only to a few. Equestrian Trail is no exception to this unfortunate trend.

Our plea is simple and yet profound in its potential impact: dissolve the current HOA and explore alternative methods of community management that engage and empower the homeowners, not stifle them. Direct community involvement through neighborhood councils or informal resident committees can be more efficient, transparent, and equitable.

By taking this step, we can ensure that the voices of those who actually live here are heard and respected. It is time we had an association – or perhaps an alternative that better suits our needs – that supports us all in building a thriving and inclusive community.

Join us in taking a stand. Sign this petition to disband the Equestrian Trail HOA and pave the way for a community that genuinely serves its people.
