I am writing this petition because I believe it is time for Otterbein University to disband its TurningPointUSA chapter. For me, this issue is deeply personal as I have seen firsthand the polarizing impact that this organization has had on our campus community. It has created an environment where division prevails over unity, and where constructive dialogue is overshadowed by divisive rhetoric.

TurningPointUSA, while claiming to promote free speech and conservative principles, has often been associated with activities and rhetoric that foster discrimination, intolerance, and misinformation. These elements do not align with Otterbein University's values of inclusivity, diversity, and respectful dialogue. Students of Otterbein have made efforts to create LGBTQIA+ safe spaces, organizations, and create more inclusive organizations. According to numerous reports, including those from the Southern Poverty Law Center, TurningPointUSA has ties to activities that have negatively impacted college campuses across the United States.

Students of all political ideologies should feel safe and respected on campus. However, the presence of TurningPointUSA has made many students feel marginalized and oppressed, creating a hostile environment where fear prevails over open communication. This is not the type of college experience any student should have to endure.

A study conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute shows that a majority of college students believe that promoting understanding and dialogue among diverse groups can only benefit the academic community. At Otterbein, fostering such an environment means welcoming a variety of opinions without resorting to the divisive tactics often employed by TurningPointUSA.

By disbanding the Otterbein University TurningPointUSA chapter, we can make a commitment to fostering a truly inclusive and respectful academic environment. One that encourages open, intelligent dialogue amongst its students without fear of discrimination or harassment.

I urge the administration at Otterbein University to take a stand for its students and the values it holds dear. Let us work together to create a campus culture that prioritizes mutual respect and understanding above all else.
