Help save this near extinct local fish - the Chinese Bahaba (黃唇魚)

The Issue

We would like the Government of Hong Kong to pass a law to protect this near extinct local fish, the Chinese Bahaba.  There is a law to protect this species in China, but unfortunately not in Hong Kong.

The Chinese Bahaba 黃唇魚 (Bahaba taipingensis) or the Giant Yellow Croaker 黃鰲魚 can reach 6ft in length and weigh more than 220lb. It is particularly prized for its swim bladder (魚鰾所制成的花膠), which is used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine to cure heart and lung ailments. It is found in southern parts of China between the Yangtze River southwards to Hong Kong and Macau.

Regionally, China has listed the Chinese Bahaba as Grade II Protected Species (the same level of protection as the panda) since 1989, and in 2005 China passed a law to protect the area of the Pearl River estuary so that it is illegal to catch, trade or own any Chinese Bahaba.

According to the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red List in 2006, the Chinese Bahaba is listed as a "Critically Endangered Species", which means that it is just one step away from extinction.

WHY ISN'T THERE ANY LAW IN HONG KONG TO PROTECT THIS LOCAL FISH?

As a first step, PLEASE STOP EATING THE FISH MAW OF THE CHINESE BAHABA. Like the shark's fins, if consumption drops, the demand for this fish will decrease accordingly.

Next, please sign to bring awareness of the need to protect this endangered species. The Chinese Bahaba is a native species of Hong Kong.  It is one of us, so we must protect it. They are getting endangered due to habitat loss and mainly to over-fishing.  If we want our next generation to see this fish, we should pass a law to protect it in Hong Kong, just like we are protecting the Chinese White Dolphins.
