The issue

I have taken pride in our nation's robust commitment to democracy and justice, where political differences are addressed through respectful dialogue, fair elections, and adherence to the rule of law. Our country stands as a beacon of hope and progress—a place where the values of peace and coexistence thrive over the shadows of intimidation and violence.

This is why I was profoundly disturbed by the recent public demonstration involving Anupam Kaloti, where the unimaginable act of depicting the simulated beheading of Rt Hon. Winston Peters was on display. Regardless of political affiliations or beliefs, this depiction was not only shocking but entirely antithetical to the New Zealand values I hold dear. Such demonstrations risk normalising violent imagery, potentially encouraging hostility and division detrimental to the fabric of our society.

It is particularly concerning when new immigrants to New Zealand, establish activist organisations, such as the Migrant Workers Association of Aotearoa, and then seek to make demands of the New Zealand Government before demonstrating a willingness to integrate into New Zealand society. As an immigrant myself, I speak from personal experience. I am deeply grateful that New Zealand welcomed my family and me, and I would never have imagined arriving here and immediately demanding political change. I believe that those who choose to make New Zealand their home should respect our democratic institutions, laws, culture, and values while participating in public life in a constructive and respectful manner. Behaviour that glorifies or appears to encourage political violence has no place in New Zealand. Regardless of whether similar forms of political protest may be accepted elsewhere, they should not be normalised or tolerated here.

We urge the Minister of Immigration to instruct Immigration New Zealand to conduct a thorough investigation into whether Anupam Kaloti’s conduct aligns with the standards of those permitted to reside or retain citizenship in New Zealand. Our laws are designed to protect the integrity of our diverse and respectful community by ensuring that individuals granted the privilege of living here uphold our shared values.

Should the investigation reveal that Kaloti’s actions warrant legal consequences under New Zealand immigration or citizenship laws, we request that the appropriate measures be enacted. By doing so, we reinforce our commitment to democracy and a peaceful society, sending a clear message that violent depictions and actions will not be tolerated.

In preserving what makes New Zealand a leading example of democracy, we must act decisively. Join me in urging the necessary authorities to uphold the values that make our nation exceptional. Please sign this petition to advocate for accountability and uphold New Zealand's democratic integrity.
