Do not disturb the graves at Christ Church Cotmanhay & Shipley, but leave them as they are
Why this petition matters
Most of the cremated remains plots in the garden of remembrance at Christ Church Cotmanhay and Shipley have small kerb sets. Some of these have been in place for over twenty years.
The families who tend these graves have now been told they need to remove the kerbs and any other ‘adornments’ in line with diocese regulations, and the memorial stone must be flush to the ground surrounded by natural grass. They have been given a deadline of 1st January 2021 to remove these themselves or have them taken away.
No-one was made aware of the regulations when their loved ones were buried there. Grass does not grow in the majority of the area due to overhanging trees from nearby properties. Without the kerb sets it would be a mud bath. At present families look after the plots, keeping them clean, tidy and respectable. Take away the kerb sets and people will have no choice but to either trample mud everywhere, or stop going for fear of slipping over.
It is hard enough to lose someone you love.
To have their final resting place tampered with is heartbreaking. Grief never goes away, but this situation is magnifying it, resulting in feelings of loss and bereavement all over again.
