How our lives changed dramatically in 20 minutes.
We (Deborah my partner, Myself Patrick, Mocha Kelpie mother and Kenya Mocha's 6 year old pup) were headed back home to Pillar Valley NSW after a life long dream to see Lake Eyre with water in it.
We had stopped over the previous night at an outback sheep station on the Oodnadatta trak that welcomed travellers and their animals in a beautifull camp not far from the homestead. The camp site which was featured in an edition of " CAMPS AUSTRALIA" recomended it as very good camp for big rig caravans and pet friendly. The station called "FARINA" was an historic town now laying in ruins, however being restored by the Sth Australian historical society.
As usual prior to our departing for the days travel we walked our two kelpies for their morning excersize and toilet business. We had them on leads thru the campsite and out onto a deserted road which lead to a distant property called "Wtchelina" once out of the campsite and onto this road we unleashed the kelpies so they could run and frolic.(at this point there were no signs indicating that 1080 had been placed in thie camps vicinity. we have since been told by someone at "FARINA" that 1080 had been distributed 3 to 4 weeks ago)
We returned back to our car and departed for Leigh Creek. 60 klms sth. Just out of Leigh Creek Deborah Noticed one of the dogs had been sick and suggested I pull over. We both thought it was Mocha the mother as she frequently got car sick. Strangely enough only minutes before I looked in my rearview mirror and saw Kenya resting his head on his mothers back and he so often would do, and so I thought that he was just trying to comfort his mother.
We pulled the car over at a deserted ruin by the old Ghann railway trak at the foot of the northern Flinders Ranges. We got out of the car and let the pups out for a run and clean up the sick off their blanket. Deborah made a cuppa and as usual I offered Kenya some of my morning coffee biscuit, and found it strange that he wasn't interested in it.
Whilst I was cleaning the dogs rug, Deborah went for a walk with the dogs.....She was no more than 50 meters away when I heard her scream " KENYA'S dying"....I ran to where Kenya was lying on the ground convulsing in an excruitiatinlg horrifying siezure, all four legs rigid and frothing and vomiting.
I cradled him in my arms and held him while I wept and prayed for Jesus to either end his life or restore him back to health. Both Deborah and I were so distraught at the site of our beautifull friend suffering such an excrutiating painfull sickness that I asked Deborah to go to the Hiway and flag a passing car down and ask if they had a gun to put poor Kenya out of this terrifying misery.
Deborah managed to flag down a car, however thanks to the grace of God, Kenya had his last of 5 horrifying convulsions and whimpered a most pathetic little cry and died in my arms against my chest.
We buried KENYA where he passed at the ruins in a most Majestic setting of the rugged outback Flinders Ranges.
For those who advocate the use of this insiduous method of animal control, have obviously never experienced witnessing a most horrific excrutiating and painfull end to life of a beloved family friend.
In 1966 whilst on a tour in Vietnam, I was part of a ships company in the RAN. We shelled villages in support of the Army so they could illiminate enemy gorillas taking shelter in the villages. I personally never witnessed the carnage that took place, yet I have been in therapy for PTSD since, continuously reliving my contribution to the unimaginable suffering I was party to....And now as I grieve the loss and at the way I lost my wonderfull furry friend. I am tortured by thoughts of holding a dying child as I imagine would have taken place in that little village ein Vietnam some 50 years ago, a result of someone elses authority .....
PLEASE STOP THE KILLING!!
