Diminish the Stigma Surrounding Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Recovery
The Issue
My name is a survivor, a student, and an advocate. I am in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD), and I am currently studying to help others on their path to recovery. Throughout my journey, I have faced multiple instances of stigma associated with SUD.
This stigma is not just harmful—it's also widespread. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about 21 million people in the U.S suffer from at least one addiction, yet only 10% receive treatment. This gap is largely due to societal misconceptions and prejudices that discourage individuals from seeking help.
In Columbus, OH alone—our community—the Ohio Department of Health reports that drug overdose deaths increased by nearly 45% between 2019 and 2020. This alarming rise underlines the urgency of our cause.
We must work together to reduce this stigma surrounding SUD and recovery. By doing so, we can create an environment where individuals feel safe seeking help without fear of judgment or discrimination.
I urge you all—whether you're personally affected by SUD or simply believe in a more compassionate society—to sign this petition. Let us stand together for understanding over prejudice; support over isolation; hope over despair.
Please sign this petition today—and let's take another step towards reducing the stigma surrounding substance use disorder (SUD) and recovery.
