Dim the Roslyn Street Lights: Restore Nightlife, Amenity & Local Culture
Petition to the City of Sydney
Why this matters
Roslyn Street, Potts Point, has long been a vibrant village high street, place where residents, visitors, and local businesses come together to enjoy food, culture, and community.
Recent changes to street lighting have made the area excessively bright at night, fundamentally altering the character of the street.
What was once warm, inviting and atmospheric now feels harsh, overexposed, and unwelcoming.
The problem
The current lighting levels:
Disrupt the natural ambience of a nighttime dining and cultural precinct
Negatively impact local businesses that rely on atmosphere and experience
Affect nearby residents by increasing light spill into homes
Create a sterile environment more suited to a major stadium than a neighbourhood street
Roslyn Street now feels closer to Allianz Stadium than a village high street.
What we are asking for
We are not asking for lights to be removed.
We are asking for a balanced, practical solution that maintains safety while restoring amenity and character:
Dim lighting levels after evening hours (e.g. from 6pm onward)
Introduce warmer-toned lighting appropriate for a hospitality precinct
Conduct a trial period with community and business feedback
Engage directly with local stakeholders to find the right balance
Why this is reasonable
Good urban design balances safety, liveability, and culture.
Over-lighting is not the only path to safety and when done poorly, it can actively harm the social and economic life of a precinct.
Potts Point and Kings Cross are globally recognised for their character. Lighting should support that identity not erase it.
Our request
We call on the City of Sydney to:
Review current lighting levels on Roslyn Street
Work with residents and local businesses
Implement a more appropriate nighttime lighting strategy
Add your name
If you believe Roslyn Street should remain a vibrant, liveable, and culturally rich neighbourhood not an over-lit corridor, please sign this petition.
Together, we can restore the balance.
