Dim the Lights, Save Our Wildlife!

Dim the Lights, Save Our Wildlife!
The Issue
As a zoology major and a passionate advocate for the well-being of our wildlife, I am deeply concerned about the impact of excessive light pollution on their natural processes. At SIU, we are fortunate to have beautiful stadiums and fields that provide entertainment and recreational opportunities for our community. However, these bright lights that illuminate our nights are causing significant harm to our local wildlife.
Light pollution disrupts the natural behavior and patterns of various species. Nocturnal animals rely on darkness to carry out essential activities such as foraging, mating, and migration. The excessive artificial illumination confuses their internal clocks and interferes with their ability to navigate accurately.
Research conducted by reputable organizations like the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has shown alarming consequences of light pollution on wildlife. Birds often become disoriented by bright lights during migration periods, leading to collisions with buildings or exhaustion from circling illuminated areas excessively.
Light pollution affects not only animals, but also human health. Exposure to bright lights at night disrupts sleep patterns which can lead to insomnia or other sleep disorders. This disturbance in sleep negatively impacts overall well-being and productivity.
To address this issue effectively at SIU, I urge local authorities responsible for managing stadium and field lighting systems to take immediate action:
1. Implement a policy requiring stadium operators to turn off lights whenever possible.
2. Set timers on smaller fields to minimize the chance of lights being left on throughout the night.
3. Change certain stadium/streetlight light bulbs to a warm-colored light to reduce the amount of light scatter across an area.
By implementing these measures in SIU's stadiums and fields at night-time hours when they are not in use, we can significantly reduce light pollution and create a safer environment for our local wildlife. This action will also contribute to the preservation of our natural heritage, allowing animals to thrive and ensuring a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
Together, let's make Carbondale a beacon of responsible lighting practices that prioritize the well-being of both humans and wildlife. Sign this petition today to support dimming the lights and saving our precious wildlife from the harmful effects of light pollution!
Thank you for your support in protecting our environment and promoting sustainable practices.
Sincerely,
Sarah Depa
