Diaspora Voting Rights in the Mauritian Electoral Reform

The Issue

The Government of Mauritius is currently inviting proposals for the reform of its electoral system.

As part of this national dialogue, we, Bridge Moris, a Mauritian diaspora platform, respectfully express our support for the introduction of a legal and practical framework that would allow Mauritian citizens living abroad to participate in national elections.

Many Mauritians overseas maintain strong ties to the country and contribute to its economic, cultural, and social life. Enabling them to vote—whether through in-person voting at consulates, postal voting, or other secure mechanisms—would strengthen democratic participation and ensure that all citizens are treated fairly, regardless of where they reside.

We set up this petition to show, concretely, how many diaspora members care about the right to vote.

By signing this petition, you, a member of the diaspora, are indicating that you believe:

  1. Mauritians living abroad should have the opportunity to vote in national elections; and

  2. The Government should include diaspora participation as a specific element of the current electoral reform process.

This petition does not support or oppose any political party, candidate, or political agenda. It reflects a shared commitment to civic inclusion and to modernizing Mauritius’s democratic institutions.

We will be including the outcome of this petition in a proposal we will be sharing with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Electoral Reform Secretariat at the end of January 2026, in support of the diaspora's right to vote. We invite the Prime Minister’s Office and the Electoral Reform Secretariat to take this important data point into consideration as they review proposals.
