Change the name of Type 1 Diabetes to help separate diabetes types during data collection.

Change the name of Type 1 Diabetes to help separate diabetes types during data collection.

The Issue

During the COVID-19 pandemic the diabetic community has struggled to access useful data on the level of risk we are at. Added to this is the combining of type one and two diabetes as simply “diabetes” when data is being collected and presented as in the sky news article which was published on 14/05/2020 stating that 26% of all people who have died due to COVID-19 also had diabetes. This combining of the two results in us not knowing if there is higher risk to people with type 1 or type 2 or if we are both equally at risk. After all, the two conditions are very different and have very different causes. Type 2 is often caused by unhealthy lifestyle factors and it is possible that these factors heavily influence the number of COVID deaths in people with diabetes. Type 1 is caused by genetics, meaning that there is a higher percentage of otherwise healthy people with this condition. Are they at an increased risk from COVID or not. Whilst a name change will not provide all of the answers and data needed, it will go a long way towards separating data and making it more concise to aid both sides of the diabetic community in knowing how at risk they are. This will not only help during the current pandemic but also in future research and awareness of the conditions. Autoimmune Beta Cell Apoptosis (BCA) is one suggestion I would have for the renaming of type 1 diabetes as it accurately reflects the condition whilst clearly differentiating it from type 2. Obviously it would be easier if researchers and the media simply differentiated the two more often and more clearly but as that is consistently not an action that has been taken I believe it is time for a more drastic change.
