Why this petition matters

Started by Ana I

Hello everyone, I am a primary school teacher who has always advocated for change in the curriculum. In light of the most recent events, black people are rightly hurt and their energies are depleted. We now need EVERYBODY to rally together to make a change. This isn't about putting blanket statements so you can be perceived as an ally. It's about being a true catalyst for change.

I am aware of the bias that has been long ingrained in the geography curriculum depicting Africa as a dirty continent with little to no wealth and uneducated. The history curriculum has always focused on white anglo-Saxons. This is the tip of the iceberg, there are so many events and changes in living memory that black people have contributed to that has never been mentioned in the curriculum. We need to have a curriculum that truly depicts what black people have done in the UK and worldwide. We need to ensure that in PSHE, racial conversations are statutory so children feel there is an open space to ask questions and have them answered by objective educators. I urge you to share this petition far and wide so we can start deconstructing this redundant curriculum.
