Develop national work schemes for prison leavers

The Issue

Sometimes, good, intelligent people make mistakes. This often happens when they are young and find themselves in circumstances beyond their control. These missteps shouldn't define the rest of their lives. Facing the world after serving time is daunting, much more so when you're stigmatized by society. Those leaving prison encounter challenges that the average person cannot begin to comprehend. Without adequate support, they might fall into the same patterns that led them to prison in the first place.

We urge the government to develop and implement robust national work schemes tailored for individuals who are exiting the prison system. Such initiatives (free from exploitation) would focus on equipping them with essential skills, helping them gain employment, and ultimately reducing the likelihood of reoffending. These programmes would serve as a lifeline, offering hope and direction to individuals seeking a fresh start.

Evidence shows that employment drastically reduces the recidivism rate. According to the National Institute of Justice, individuals who find consistent work after release are much less likely to return to prison. Yet, many face systemic barriers like discrimination and lack of training, which hinder their ability to succeed.

We propose a comprehensive plan that includes vocational training, partnerships with industries willing to employ former inmates, and continuous mentorship programmes. With these measures in place, we can cultivate a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to contribute positively.

Let's give prison leavers the tools they need to turn their lives around. Sign this petition to advocate for the creation of national work schemes that will support their reintegration and reduce recidivism. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future for these individuals, their families, and our communities. Please add your signature today to champion change and provide a second chance for those seeking it.
