Develop Mount Patti for tourism

The Issue

With all Nigeria is endowed with, it's still baffling that poverty still ravages certain parts of the country, such as Lokoja. Water is a scarce resource, electricity supply is erratic, and several roads are still in miserable conditions. The state does not generate sufficient internal revenue to cater for the social needs of its inhabitants.

Tourism has been determined to be a high potential revenue source that has remained untapped in the city of Lokoja. The city hosts many fascinating sites such as the confluence of the two most significant rivers in the country, River Niger and River Benue. One of its most interesting sites is a historic and recreational hill called Mount Patti, a popular attraction with a breath-taking experience, but it has not been well developed to yield economic value for the state and its inhabitants. The fact that a view by Ms. Flora Shaw from the top of this hill gave the inspiration of the name "Nigeria" is a priceless history to maintain the worth of this place.

It's the very place where Lord Lugard built his rest house around 1900, which is still there till today. With its hairpin bends, ancient rocky hills, serene ambience and thick lush vegetation comprising of gigantic trees and chirping birds, the plateau is a natural beauty. Climbing up Mount Patti is not just a venture, but an adventure. In spite of its unharnessed state, people keep trooping in weekly, but the site mints no revenue from these visits.

We are calling out to the Goverment of Kogi state to kindly develop Mount Patti and make it a resort. The presence of other facilities like gardens, a cable car, a gym, a spa, a paintball arena to mention but a few will not just increase the number of visitors, but also enable the resort to be economically productive, and boost the internally generated revenue of the state. The surrounding communities will reap the best advantages when visitors patronise goods and services. This will indirectly have an impact on other social developments such as electricity, water, transportation and lots more which will meet the needs of the tourists and be available for use by the locals.

Though a lot of change has to take place for the city to become modernised, we believe the development of Mount Patti is pivotal and will pave the way for further developments.
