DEVELOP MISSING MARKS/ DELAYED GRADUATION POLICY : End the undue suffering in universities

The Issue

I was appalled by a recent experience where a lecturer in charge of examinations simply refused to help fix a missing mark and arrogantly directed me to tell the chairman that he had said he would not help me. He had ordered that I come personally to see him. I had to travel from upcountry to the city incurring time and money in the process only to be chased away.

I attended all the classes, sat all the exams but it really pained me to know that getting that grade fixed and ultimately graduating from university was at a lecturer's mercy. I pleaded with him. I had to. Yet still, he turned me down.

A friend told me she couldn't stop crying because of frustrations she went through looking for her marks at the department.
Another one spent more than Ksh 20,000 travelling to school to handle missing marks.
Others have their graduation delayed for years or are told to repeat a whole academic year.
These stories are all too familiar.

Missing marks in the purview of public university education is a crisis. Its so rampant almost every student is affected. A lot of students suffer in the hands of lecturers courtesy of missing marks. You are really lucky to have all your grades on the result slip.

It has been normalized so much so that we think there is nothing we can do about it. We can only persevere. But thousands of students continue suffering monetary loss, mental torture, missed opportunities and delayed graduation.

By signing this petition you are calling for universities to develop specific policies to mitigate cases of missing/withheld marks and to handle such cases with civility, ease and convenience so that no one has to unduly suffer, especially not the students and parents who have to pay hefty fees for higher education.

Universities must be deliberate on how they deal with missing marks. It's not a matter that should be left to the volition of lecturers.

These policies must have students' inputs considered. Every possible cause of missing marks must be explored and addressed.

The Ministry of Education should make sure all universities have these policies.

Considerations:

Methods of protecting exam attendance evidence
Make-up CATs and special exams

Travelling lecturers
Provisional result slips for certain cases

Remote processing of missed marks

Special attention to finalists

Fee clearance

Civility when dealing with students

Penalties on lecturers etc

Unpaid lectures
