Help Us Ensure the City of Piedmont's Safety: Support the Creation of a Comprehensive Emergency Management Program

We, the undersigned residents of Piedmont, urge our City Council to remain "United in Progress" with us to establish a comprehensive Emergency Management Program (EMP) to enhance our community's preparedness, response, and resilience in the face of potential emergencies.

Why We Need an Emergency Management Program:

Enhanced Preparedness and Response:

An organized Emergency Management Program ensures that our community is better prepared for potential emergencies, from natural disasters like floods, tornadoes, and wildfires to human-made incidents such as chemical spills or infrastructure failures. According to FEMA, communities with robust emergency management programs can significantly reduce the impacts of disasters through proper planning, training, and resource management.

Importance:

  • Preparedness ensures we are ready for various emergencies.
  • Effective response strategies minimize disaster impacts.

Resource Coordination:

In rural areas, resources such as medical facilities, emergency services, and law enforcement are often limited and spread thin. An emergency management program helps coordinate these resources more effectively, ensuring a clear, structured response in times of crisis that maximizes the available assets and support from neighboring communities and state resources.

Importance:

  • Coordinates limited resources effectively.
  • Ensures structured response using local and neighboring assets.

Community Resilience:

Emergency management programs contribute to the community's overall resilience by promoting awareness, preparedness, and self-sufficiency among residents. The Community & Regional Resilience Institute (CARRI) emphasizes that resilient communities recover faster and more efficiently from disasters, minimizing long-term impacts on local economies and the well-being of residents.

Importance:

  • Promotes awareness and preparedness.
  • Enhances community recovery and minimizes long-term impacts.

Risk Mitigation:

Proactive risk assessment and mitigation strategies are integral components of emergency management. Identifying potential hazards and implementing measures to reduce their impact can save lives and protect property. The National Institute of Building Sciences reports that every dollar spent on hazard mitigation saves an average of six dollars in future disaster costs.

Importance:

  • Identifies and mitigates potential hazards.
  • Saves lives, protects property, and reduces future disaster costs.

By signing this petition, you are expressing your support for establishing a comprehensive Emergency Management Program within the City of Piedmont. This program will safeguard our community, enhance our ability to respond to emergencies and ensure a swift recovery.

We urge the Piedmont City Council to:

  • Review the proposal for the EMP.
  • Allocate necessary resources and funding.
  • Appoint a qualified Emergency Manager to lead the program.

How to Support:

  • Sign this petition to show your support.
  • Share this petition with friends, family, and neighbors.
  • Attend City Council meetings to voice your support for the EMP.
