Don't Promote Violent Cop

The Issue

Don't reward this abusive cop with a promotion!

Please reject Detroit Police Chief James Craig's recommendation  to promote Corporal Dewayne Jones to the rank of Sergeant. We have all been witness to the cell phone video of Jones beating this naked unarmed woman in a hospital room in August of 2018.  A court convicted him of assault in March 2019.

He should have been fired.  If he is rewarded for this blatant act of police brutality, then nobody in the City of Detroit will be able to feel safe.  The message will be loud and clear: "Want a promotion? Beat a woman."  That is the wrong message.  Your duty is to hold abusive police accountable; do that.

Plans for the promotion were made public at the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners meeting Thursday January 9th.  Chairperson Lisa Carter read an excerpt of the Chief’s recommendation, to promote Jones to the rank of Sergeant, to attendees as part of her officer’s report. Craig issued the recommendation on January 8th.

Scotty Boman, founder of Detroit Residents Advancing Civilian Oversight (DRACO) said “I am deeply disturbed by this development and it’s time to put the commissioners on notice.  We already have people prepared to initiate the recall process..."

The Board voted against the promotion, then this happened...

On Thursday April 9th, at the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners (BOPC) Meeting, I heard some bad news.  Detroit Police Department attorney Grant Ha announced the decision of arbitrator George Roumell pto promote Dewayne Jones. The Roumell has not yet delivered the formal letter to the DPD.

The Charter doesn't give arbitrators the authority to promote police without the approval of the BOPC.  Jones has been convicted of the brutal assault of emergency room patient Sheldy Smith in August of 2018.

The Board must use it's oversight authority to reject this recommendation and dismiss Jones along with any member of the Detroit Police Department who attempts to effectuate this offensive decision. We demand that The BOPC use all means judicial means available to resist any litigation designed to reward this violent person with a promotion.
