Destigmatize Schizophrenia In The Media

The Issue

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by disruptions in thought processes, perceptions, emotional responsiveness, and social interaction. This condition has been portrayed many times in movies and television shows. The portrayals that have been shown in the media often misrepresent the condition and create harmful stereotypes and stigmas. There are several stigmas associated with schizophrenia. The assumption that people with schizophrenia are inherently violent and chaotic, which leads to their social exclusion or labeling with derogatory terms, is a common stigma against people with this condition. There is a lack of knowledge about the lived experience of schizophrenia; only a small portion of Americans consider themselves to be familiar with the condition, and many of those who have heard of it fear encountering those who have it at work or in their personal lives, even those who are receiving treatment. Negative press coverage enhances this stereotype. Even though statistics show that those with schizophrenia are less likely to engage in violent behavior than those without the disorder, it is common for individuals with schizophrenia to appear in the media in association with a violent incident. In actuality, those who have schizophrenia are more likely to become victims of violence than members of the general population. The misrepresentations of this condition in the media have created an unsafe environment for those who suffer from this condition. We want to reduce the stereotypes and harmful words associated with this condition in movies and television shows to hopefully get rid of the stigma around the condition.
