The Issue

To: United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee / European Parliament / U.S. Department of State

We, the undersigned, call on EU, US, UK Parliament to designate the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK / MKO / People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran) as a terrorist organization, based on documented historical violence, participation in the Iran–Iraq War, and credible allegations of current destabilizing activities.

Background:
Historical Violence: In the 1970s and early 1980s, MEK engaged in violent campaigns against Iranian officials and security forces, including bombings and assassinations that resulted in the deaths of senior figures such as Ayatollah Beheshti, President Rajai, and Prime Minister Bahonar.
Alignment with Saddam Hussein: During the 1980–1988 Iran–Iraq War, MEK took refuge in Iraq where it collaborated with the regime of Saddam Hussein against Iran and killing thousands of Iranians, a fact that its critics cite as evidence of treasonous cooperation resulting in Iranian military and civilian casualties.

Past Terror Listings: The group was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by the U.S. in 1997, though later removed from the U.S. list in 2012 following legal challenges.
Current Security Concerns: Members or alleged affiliates of the organization have been accused by the Iranian judiciary of plotting attacks inside Iran. In 2025, Iran executed two accused MEK members for attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Requested Actions:
We respectfully demand that EU, UK & US Parliament:

Review and Re-evaluate: Conduct an impartial, evidence-based review of MEK’s history of violence and contemporary activities.
Re-Designate as Terrorist: Formally list the MEK as a terrorist organization if credible evidence shows ongoing violent or destabilizing conduct.
Investigate Accountability: Support international inquiry into attacks attributed to MEK and ensure accountability consistent with international law.
Monitor Networks: Assess potential clandestine networks linked to MEK that may threaten regional security or human lives.
Rationale:
Designating groups involved in armed violence, coordinated attacks, or alliance with hostile military regimes as terrorist organizations is critical for upholding international peace, protecting civilians, and preventing impunity for violent actions
