Designate "Potter's Point" in honor of Christopher Potter
The Issue
The City of Goleta will vote on naming a point along the coastline in Ellwood to “Potter’s Point” in honor of Goleta legend Christopher Potter at an upcoming April City Council meeting. Please join me in co-signing the petition. - County Supervisor Laura Capps
Dear Mayor Perotte and Members of the Goleta City Council,
Christopher Potter (1975 - 2024) is a local Goleta legend; his loving impact on our community will last far into the future. Chris was born in Goleta Valley Hospital and he attended Ellwood Elementary, Goleta Valley Jr. High, Dos Pueblos and UCSB. He and his wife Julie raised their two children, Malakye and Zenia, in Goleta.
For decades, Chris’ art has captured the beauty and spirit of our county’s seascapes, landscapes and historical sites. Chris’ attitude to life also embodied the best of our community. He was a wonderful father, a steady friend to many, and a warm and engaging presence to countless people who were the recipients of his infectious smile. He gave back in many ways, often by donating his art to nonprofit organizations for their auctions.
Christopher’s beloved place to be was along the coastline in Ellwood, unofficially deemed by his friends as “Potter’s Point.” It is there where he often painted. It is there where he spent time with his friends and family. It is there where he took in and was inspired by nature. As one of his friends shared at his memorial service, Chris would often say at Ellwood, “Good Job, Mother Nature!”
Upon learning the news of his sudden passing on February 3rd, many spontaneously gathered at Potter’s Point to share their grief, hugs, and love for Chris. Several hundred people turned out for his memorial service, filling the Elings auditorium at Dos Pueblos High School. Story after story reminded us of the gifts of humor, generosity, and love he gave to us.
As Matt Kettman eloquently described in The Santa Barbara Independent:
“I’ve never known someone who so brilliantly used his own natural wonder about the world to spark similar awe in all who gazed upon his creations. His daily dedication and ability to paint efficiently led to remarkable success as an artist, turning what most approach as a hobby into a full-time job to support his family. Despite needing to earn a living through that work, he frequently acted selflessly, donating hundreds of paintings to causes and people who needed a financial or emotional boost.”
A fitting tribute to the indelible impact Chris has on us all would be to officially designate Potter’s Point. I hope you will take such an action that would mean so much to Chris’ family and the thousands of us who deeply feel the loss of such a caring, talented and giving man. It would be a fitting tribute to a life that exemplified the best of Goleta.
Thank you for your consideration.
