Designate July as National Veteran Spouse Mental Health Awareness Month

The Issue

I write this petition with a heart heavy with personal experience and hope for the future. My husband offered twelve years of his life in the service of this nation, eight of which we spent side by side. Yet, when we needed our nation's support the most, we found ourselves facing an uncaring system. Rather than receiving the help we desperately needed, we were met with claims that advocating for veteran spouses detracted from the resources for veterans themselves. This narrative must change. Veteran spouses shouldn't be viewed as distractions, but as integral parts of the veteran community. They face unique struggles, both physical and mental, and are more often than not left to navigate these challenges without appropriate support.

According to a study conducted by the National Military Family Association, 88% of the spouses reported increased stress, anxiety, or depression due to their spouse’s deployment. Yet, resources, awareness, and support specifically targeting the mental well-being of veteran spouses are sadly lacking. It's not just about our veterans. The families that serve beside them are equally deserving of attention and assistance. Designating July as 'National Veteran Spouse Mental Health Awareness Month’ would be a monumental step towards acknowledging their struggles and expanding resources to support them.

By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to the countless veteran spouses who go unnoticed and unheard. They deserve better. Let us stand together and advocate for this life-changing decision. Please sign this petition and ask our lawmakers to designate July as National Veteran Spouse Mental Health Awareness Month.
