Designate July 3rd as a US Federal Holiday - Issues Day
The Issue
People who sign this petition are committed to the idea that the United States of America is a work in progress.
We ask that the United States government designate July 3rd, the day before Independence Day, as a federal holiday, which we are provisionally calling, Issues Day.
On this day, the people of the United States would be asked to take the day to discuss with each other, openly and honestly, the issues that they believe are still facing the American people.
Before we use July 4th to celebrate the good parts of living in our country, it is our belief that we should first sit down and talk about the parts of living in this country that trouble us and how we as a society can resolve these issues as best as we can.
We back this petition in a completely non-partisan way. This holiday would be about everyone bringing their issues to light, whether conservative or liberal, and having open conversations in the light of day.
It is our hope that with this holiday, we will be able to help heal some of the bonds that have held our country together for almost 250 years, by sitting down and discussing things, like our Founding Fathers did in Philadelphia. And then the next day, celebrating together the things that we can agree make this country the place that we choose to live in.
