The Issue

In our community, there are countless individuals who yearn for a place where they can simply exist without fear, harassment, or insecurity. Many of us have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. It's not just about lacking a roof over their heads; it's about needing a place where they can build a life, regain lost dignity, and feel human again.

Every day, I see people in makeshift shelters, struggling to find a safe space to sleep at night, to keep their belongings, and to maintain some semblance of stability. These aren't just statistics; they're mothers, fathers, and young people who find themselves in challenging situations due to circumstances such as loss of employment, unaffordable housing, health issues, and personal crises.

Choosing a designated encampment area where individuals in need can go would provide immediate safety and stability. It could be equipped with necessary facilities such as sanitation, water supply, and access to social services. This proposal isn't just a temporary fix but a step toward providing these individuals the stepping stones they need to reintegrate into society.

Take, for example, cities like Seattle and Los Angeles, which have initiated similar projects with measurable success. In Seattle, the establishment of designated encampments has reduced the number of people living on streets, while also connecting them to vital resources. These examples prove that with proactive measures, we can make a significant impact on the lives of those affected in our own communities.

This is also happening in cities in Ontario; London and Thunder Bay for example.  In Kitchener though, legal rulings in January of 2023 and most recently in May have resulted in the city being forced to allow people to stay in an area they want to develop at an enormous cost.  By choosing an area in Orillia, we can cut down expenses of police and bylaw and even begin to plan for a tiny home development where people's benefits can offset the cost of homes and utilities, sanitation, etc. making it pay for itself and even run a profit to continue to buy more homes.  These homes can be moved easily when city wants to develop those lands.

The safety and well-being of all community members should be a priority. By designating a safe space for people to exist, we can address immediate needs while working toward long-term solutions such as affordable housing and sustainable employment opportunities. Recognize the humanity of those facing homelessness, and offer them a chance at a better future.

I urge you to consider this essential step for our community, for it is not just about managing a crisis but about showing empathy and fostering hope. Please sign this petition and call on our local government to implement a designated encampment area. Together, let's create a haven for those who have nowhere else to go and make our community a model of compassion and effectiveness.
