Designate 120 West 28th Street an Historic Landmark
The Issue
I'm a florist in the city and have shopped in the New York Flower Market since I was a teen. Over the years, I've watched with heartache as the flower shops that once flourished along 28th street have been replaced by high-rise hotels. The street is losing its charm and flower sellers are being pushed out and zoned out. The people of the Flower Market are more than just vendors to me; they are my friends and my community in this city. It is for them and for future generations that I'm starting this petition to designate 120 West 28th Street an historic landmark.
The Flower District has long been at the heart of our city's culture and history, with its roots in Chelsea dating back to the 1880's. Today, it remains one of New York City's most vibrant commercial districts despite increasing development pressures.
120 West 28th Street was originally constructed as a red brick school house in 1856 and is one of the oldest public school buildings in the city. In the 20th century it was converted into a theatre, and later became the florist building; home to key flower and plant wholesalers on the ground floor and over a dozen florist studios on the floors above.
Designating 120 West 28th Street an historic landmark would be the first step towards affirming the Flower District as a valued part of our city's heritage and protecting it from further destruction. This building represents decades of tradition and community that should be celebrated and preserved.
We urge New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to recognize the historical and cultural significance of 120 West 28th Street by granting individual landmark status. With landmark status, we can keep New York New York.
Please sign this petition today if you believe in history, beauty, flowers, and preserving our cultural heritage for future generations
