Build A Store Not a Storage Unit

Build A Store Not a Storage Unit

The Issue

It has come to the attention of Des Moines East Siders that the old Gordmans building on Hubbell Avenue is being turned into a storage unit.
Just like the U-Haul storage center at the Old KMart across the street.
Just like the Affordable Family Storage at the Old Dahls.

Just like ever vacant space on the Des Moines East Side has been turned into a storage unit.

The Des Moines East Side is a food desert. Our only source of grocery is the Hyvee on E Euclid or the Hyvee a town over in Pleasant Hill. We have no options for convenience. QuickTrip and other gas stations are not grocery stores.

Since the lost of KMart and Dahls, we have continued to struggle for jobs. The DSM East Side needs infrastructure. We need jobs, we need food, not another place to store our stuff when we get evicted by our slumlords.

Storage units do not add to the infrastructure of the East Side. They are tax havens, where instead of an entertainment center or grocery store, they pay virtually nothing in taxes, thusly continuing the deterioration of the East Side property tax revenue, forcing our schools to continue to suffer.

We demand that the Des Moines City Council reject the plans to build yet another storage unit on the Des Moines East Side and instead pitch that property to build a store, a shopping center, an entertainment place like skating or trampolines. Anything else other than another storage unit.
