Dereliction of duty by the Director General of Wildlife in Sri Lanka's wildlife

The Issue

The conflict between elephants and humans in Sri Lanka has become a national issue. Here, the primary responsibility lies with the wildlife department. As the destruction of forests that is increasing day by day is directly led by politicians, public servants are following a policy of silence for their job security. For the last 13 years  A large number of elephants have died in Sri Lanka, and 80% of the deaths are due to human activities. From 2013 to 2023, 3743 Sri Lankan elephants have died due to shootings, electrocution, hacking (man-made).  Explosives), poisoning, railway accidents, general accidents, falls in pits have mainly occurred. Due to the rapid destruction of forests and the blocking of elephant tracks, elephants are now coming to the villages in large numbers. The reason is that they have lost their native lands.  The ecosystems that need to be sheltered have been lost due to human activities. Water and food, which are the basic needs of humans and all animals, are lacking mainly due to human activities. Currently, more than one elephant death is reported in this background. The Wildlife Department and the Ministry of Wildlife are directly responsible for this.  The wildlife department, whose annual income from animals exceeds 3800 crores, has no investments for wild animals. Allocating a part of this income for their welfare is part of the duty of the controllers and responsible officials.  It must be said. Mr. Chandana Suriyabandara, who is currently the Director General of the Wildlife Department, and the responsible officers of that department should resign immediately. Currently, the human elephant problem in Sri Lanka has reached its peak. The officials including this director have failed to find solutions and implement them.

Also, the human elephant problem has become a national disaster. Here, the Department of Wildlife Conservation is neglecting its responsibilities and taking decisions arbitrarily. Such officers, who are supported by public funds, are responsible to the public.  It is received as gratuities to the politicians. Such officials do no good to the country. The money that can be earned by elephants through proper management is huge for the national income.  Day by day, such national resources are only destroyed. When the current and past elephant deaths are counted, between the years 2035 and 2040, the elephant population in Sri Lanka will be completely destroyed. Then the future generations can only see elephants in pictures. Therefore, such corrupt people cannot fulfill their service to the country.  Officials should resign immediately. If not, as stated in the Wildlife Vegetation Act, let us emphasize that the public can bring government officials who have violated their trust to justice. The Director General of the Wildlife Department, Mr. Chandana Suriyabandara, should resign immediately. This is the same for Sri Lankan elephants.  It is the right of the Sri Lankan community dear to the people.
