Day by day the noise levels in this city are going up. We are well aware of the ill effects of noise pollution however we fail to take any action to curb it. We teach our kids in school about it but don't take the necessary steps to stop it. Incessant unnecessary honking especially by two wheelers, taxi drivers and bus drivers on the roads of Kolkata is causing great discomfort to many especially the elderly, kids and the sick. People living in buildings close to the arterial roads face this challenge almost 18 hours a day. It seems like the drivers believe that honking is their birthright and their incessant honking is a proclamation of their arrival on the roads!! 

It is time to rise up and stop this menace. Unnecessary honking especially in the wee hours of the morning and late night should be strictly dealt with. In spite of rules against honking in residential, hospital and school areas we rarely see drivers following them. Where is our civic sense? Are we really not bothered about how our actions affect the others? Who gives us the right to cause pain and suffering to others? Does honking on deserted roads or at a red signal make any sense? These are some of the questions we need to ask ourselves as responsible citizens of a developing society.
