Kerala (India), like many other parts of the world, is home to some of the last few surviving populations of wild and domesticated elephants. Elephant population is dwindling with time, and enough space is not being reclaimed for their survival. India may not have a major issue with Ivory Trade as some African countries would have however, the integration of elephants into Indian culture forces elephants to be chained to one spot for hours. 

Like many others, I grew up enjoying their majestic presence outside our home and on the streets. With the passage of time, it is clear that we have done them a great disservice. They have broad shoulders and are a hundred times heavier. They need more room. 

The relationship between man and animal is not being questioned here. This petition is about their need for space to move about. This is about not making a majestic creature stand at one spot for hours: in chains. This is about finding another way to accomplish our goals instead of breaking the back of an elephant. 

We have made great strides in releasing them from the Circuses of the world. Now is the time to give them space to move and exercise their freedom to scratch their backs when they want to.
